DHCP Relay

With DHCP Relay, the switch can forward DHCP messages from one VLAN or VRF to a DHCP server that resides in a different network thereby increasing the size of the network that the DHCP server (hosted or external) services.

DHCP Relay overcomes a limitation that exists due to the fact that, under the default configuration, the switch does not forward UDP broadcasts to different VLANs or VRFs. If a client broadcasts a DHCP Discover message to request an IP address from any connected DHCP server, the broadcast fails unless there is a DHCP server in the same VLAN. When you configure DHCP Relay, the switch can receive the broadcast in one VLAN or VRF and retransmit the message as a unicast message to the IP address of a remote DHCP server. The switch also relays the server response back to the client.

The following conditions exist for this feature:

Note

In the case of asymmetric routing, when a DHCP message is received from the server, there must be a working forwarding path. You can achieve this in one of two ways:
  • Configure a DHCP forwarding path using the actual IP address of that interface.
  • Use a VRRP address, in which case, if not the VRRP master, you must enable Backup Master (local ARP entry present).
